I think I FUBARed the 486. Ah well, it wasn't able to read all of the 24MB of RAM anyway. I can wait until someone else decides to donate one of their machines and I'll pop in my extra memory.

In one of the metal carcasses is a 486 motherboard with a Pentium Overdrive (83 MHz) chip installed. It was working last time I checked.
(Wait -- the 486 you FUBAR'd wasn't one of the ones I dropped off?)

Hmm.. I'll have to sift through the cases to find it. Hopefully it'll be modern enough to recognize the memory without crazy jiggling.
