I have been going through some of these puzzles in the Toronto Star for a while and figured that I should post some for people to try. They are not hard, though.
Alex has two different candles, one that burns for 3 hours and the other that burns for 5. Both are the same length. Alex lit both candles when his electricity went out one evening. Later, when one candle was 1/2 the length of the other, the electricity came back on. Alex needed to reset the electric clocks affected by the storm, but he didn't know how long the electricity had been out. Can you help him out?
Here is another problem:
What number comes next in this sequence?
1, 3, 23, 229, 2869, 43531, 776887, ?

I would like to add that people who wish to answer should do as Laz did and add spoiler markup to the posted solution so that others will not accidentally see a potential answer.
