Slashdot has lots to lots to say on the subject. I found this post to be particularly informative on the inner workings of LI batteries.
Consensus seems to be that it's the battery manufacturer's issue.. that LI batteries are inherently unstable.. that dropping them will damage them, and repeat often enough they can explode from over/under-charging.

Interesting. Unfortunately people are screaming more for battery life rather than battery safety. Mind you, the number of occurrences of flaming batteries is still quite minuscule compared to the number of batteries that are out there.
However, with strides towards making processors and other laptop components more energy efficient, we may be able to go back to a more stable (and potentially cheaper) battery.
